This is my first post expressing my ideas about shifting from economically and socially developed environment to a post-communist new born Kapital land. And spending here around 9 months is fair enough to comment about the main indicator of a capitalist system : quality of service.
Well, let me first describe what I understand from quality of service : Regardless of type of the service, price, location and customer type, serving part must provide minimum requirements of a service. These servers must be capable of the new rules of the market.
I ll give you some funny (actually sad) examples that I and people around me experienced in Romania. You can't kick out your customer if her/his wish is just to use wireless internet drinking something instead of eating full package food in your restaurant. Practically toilets in restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs is open to public, next time this free pee can return to you as a revenue. Waiters are responsible to understand the needs of the customers, you can't answer to a customer who needs some ice as 'It's already cold'. Same waiters should keep the eye contact with their customers so that they can response immediately if they have further orders. Tipping (in other words, bahsis) is quite usual in most of the markets, but you can't set up your standart serving upto the amount of the tip. You can have some 'extras' for your genereous customers, but you are paid to serve properly to all the customers in your place. Menus are intro guides to help your customers, but you must cover all wishes of your customers to satisfy them. You don't need to look dumbly on my face excusing for not being able to price the amount of my order (i.e. 1,5 dish or mix of two different dishes)
In our case, Romania has just 20 years in the new economy and it's obvious they have achieved remarkable success through these years. But, still, especially on service industry there are so many missing parts that still get on my nerves. As a restaurant you don't exist to feed people, you are there because of these people, which we call customers. As a hotel, you don't exist to harbour people, again you are there because of your customers.
As some people try to convince me that I should get used to this system is totally bullshit. We are not in 'Ford-T series' period where everyone had one and only choice. And for Romania, I am hopeful that this mindset is changing and will change sharply. It is not that hard to understand the value of your customers and play with the new rules. I don't know how long I will be staying here, but I d like to follow up with new posts and with new observations. Not to see anymore 'simply surprising' s...
