Every land has its own 'union, independence, big national, re-union, etc..' day and citizens of this land celebrate these days with a big honour. Apart from all these military shows, street demonstrations, protocols, big crowds, flags covering everywhere, the historical background of these days and reflection to today seem more interesting to me.
Currently my land, Romania, has its 92. Unification Day tomorrow. This day has also an interesting history comparing with the current situation today. Think about end of WW1, Ottomans have lost the big authority (1878), Austria-Hungarian Empire lost in the war and this land's people are hungry for a century-long dream, one nation. So what happens is, actually, citizens from Translyvania, Banat and Hungarian Country agree to join Romania. Sources note this event as 'national unity was not achieved by any politician, government or party -- it was accomplished by the Romanian nation itself. Its source was the people's powerful longing for unity, which the political leadership managed with intelligence.'
Shortly, in populist terms, Translyvania becomes no longer Hungarian, but Romanian. After almost a century, there are almost 2 million Hungarians still living in that region, keeping their language, their universities, their political identity, etc. Even there are still 'autonomy' discussions, Romanian governments haven't tried any assimilation on the minorities which is really appreciable. I think, it's also to celebrate what happened after this unification day.
Naturally, the almost-century story of this day makes me think what else happened in other 'lands'. Because unfortunately not all these unification stories are no blood-no war stories. Will be discussing in other land stories...
